Jewish Auschwitz Internee

Edith Stohl a Jewish Auschwitz internee in WW2 originally from Czechoslovakia, returned to Ireland 73 years after being offered solace in Clonony Castle, Delvin Co. Westmeath as a 10-year-old girl with her younger sister Maria, and brother Pieter, all parentless. During our guided tour, she visited the run-down castle which was in Nama at the ingenuity of parish priest Fr O Connell and Maude O Driscoll the caretaker owner who proved excellent hosts.

Edith’s eureka moment was seeing the exact same bedroom cornicing that she witnessed as a child during her 8-month stay before repatriation to Israel. Her daughter Claudia a high-ranking Israeli army officer visited many German SS descendant residences. They were not entirely enamored with her presence.
